About Primal Volleyball

The mission of Primal Volleyball is to help players become the most dynamic, balanced, confident athletes they can be. Through years of studying engineering, kinesiology, countless hours of volleyball footage, martial arts, dance, various training and movement methodologies, and even stage performance, Primal Volleyball was created with both longevity and performance in mind.

With Primal Movement as the foundation, you will learn to master the absolute essentials of movement as a human being. Ground rest, ground play, and decompression become the ground floor to build the rest of your game on top of, leading to performance that will feel safe, fluid, supple, dynamic, and explosive.

Most athletes today are compressed. We spend countless hours suppressing our natural athleticism by sitting in chairs and couches and binding our feet in socks and shoes. These modern lifestyle comforts move our bodies towards a state of compression which manifests as joint pain, immobility, anxiety, stiffness, and decreased performance.

This is not just another workout program. This is a comprehensive movement system designed to recode your body to its optimal state, building strength on a balanced foundation. Train primal and rest primal. Attack your next practice, game or tournament with more confidence and a new sense of trust in your body.

Meet Alex Cheng

Primal Volleyball was born out of a deep obsession: not just with sports performance — but with truth.

Over the years, I studied everything from aerospace engineering to biomedical engineering to kinesiology.

I learned how to break down complex systems, analyze movement, and understand the mechanics of the human body from the inside out.

But even in all those classrooms, something was missing.

I was searching for an education beyond the textbooks — the kind that couldn’t be graded or standardized.

I trained and began my coaching career at CPA Setter | Hitter | Libero College, where I was personally mentored by 2x NCAA D1 Champion Chris Austin.

Under Chris’ guidance, I learned how to break down and teach the true fundamentals of volleyball — not just technique, but the subtle mechanics that separate good from great.

In private sessions, group settings, and high-intensity camps, I worked directly with youth athletes, learning how to coach:

Mentality – playing with poise, presence, and resilience

Leadership – owning your voice and guiding the team

Volleyball IQ – understanding timing, flow, and decision-making

That foundation helped me bridge the gap between movement science and real-time performance.

Because knowing how to move is one thing —

Knowing when, why, and with what energy? That’s elite.

My passion then led me to Hollywood Vocal Studios Conservatory, where I studied vocal performance, songwriting, and the heart of the artist.

I performed again and again. I watched my classmates pour their souls into their songs. And what struck me most was this:

There is no difference between a great athlete and a great performer.

Both use their body as an instrument. Both need presence, rhythm, expression, and heart.

Even with all the technical understanding in the world, performance without heart falls flat.

That’s why at Primal Volleyball, we go beyond biomechanics.

I train with an ear tuned to what you feel — to what you desire, to what’s blocking you, and to what wants to come alive.

Clients

We’re honored to have our work recognized in a range of publications, platforms, and press features.

I know what it’s like to feel blocked from chasing the thing that drives you most.

When I entered high school, I was just 5'3" — recovering from a broken leg I got during soccer tryouts.

Two pins in my tibia. A full leg cast. My dream of being a professional soccer player? Crushed.

But I made it back just in time for volleyball tryouts.

And when I walked into that gym, I was easily the shortest player there.

That never changed.

What did change — was my approach.

I became obsessed with finding an edge.

How could I outthink, outmove, and outlast the taller, stronger competition?

That fire sparked a lifelong pursuit of innovation in volleyball, movement, and performance.

And now, I use that same drive to help athletes like you.
